Lying on my back, my head on an anthill, my jumper carefully folded beneath my head. Harry husband at the workshop. The Teenager back at school. Moss pottering around, I’m able to trust that she won’t leave me. I lie here and listen. The sound of rooks cawing in the background. I can hear children playing at the local primary school, insects buzzing. I guess I’m trying not to hear the sound of traffic.
What makes this moment so good? It’s the fact that I can now trust Moss to stay with me. I know that there are rabbits close by and she might chase them, but I don’t think that she’ll leave me. That is a lovely state to be in. A wood pigeon, a grass hopper, an aeroplane overhead. The companionship of a dog is an honour and a pleasure and not one bestowed on all of us. I am appreciating this now, truly.
