Intensity

Look at those eyes, can you see the intensity in the stare?  These three are Moss’s Dad and two of her brothers, Rook, Fergal and dear Oz.  (Oz was Moss’s Nanny when she was a puppy so he’s rather special to us).

It’s the intensity of Collies that makes them such extraordinary dogs.  They are bred to herd sheep, they have a remarkable ability to run and stare at the same time, which is their unique skill, and why they are such effective working dogs.

They are remarkable dogs, but do they make good pets?

To be honest, sometimes I struggle with Moss, she’s a truly wonderful little dog, but her intensity can be quite a handful.  Her natural instinct to herd is so strong.  I think that other dogs sense her need to be in control and react to it, some dogs are quite fearful of her which is tricky.

For me the perfect dog is a Collie cross Labrador, hopefully you get the emotional intelligence of a Collie whilst tempering it with the affability of a Labrador.

I’ve learned that you can’t fight breeding, so the challenge is to make the most of it.

Plus, come to think of it, maybe I’m a little intense myself.
