Lady dogs

Today Moss is like a cat on hot bricks.  She’s behaving a bit like she did about 18 months ago, she’s intense, she’s jittery and she’s lurching about on the lead.

She’s in season.

It’s certainly not her fault, it really affects her mind and her behaviour.  She looks a bit wired and she’s being quite tricky.  Her recall is not so good, she’s pulling, and doing some of her less than appealing habits.  Then of course there are the spatters of blood all over the place.

I get the feeling she needs me to stand really solid beside her.  Just like my teenage daughter, her cycle really affects her, and sometimes it’s quite challenging.

It’s all part of being female.

She needs me to be tolerant, she’s not being naughty, it’s just her hormones have taken over her brain for the time being.  She’s an affectionate dog, but at the moment she’s being quite clingy, which is not like her at all, normally she’s quite an independent soul.

Recently I spoke to a doggy friend of mine, I mentioned how much Moss’s season affects her behaviour.  My friend prefers to have gentlemen dogs, she pointed out that one bitch coming into season can really affect the behaviour of many male dogs.

This is powerful stuff.

It reminded me of many years ago when I had Louis, a Collie/Spaniel, and a local bitch came into season, he paced around for several nights and became quite tormented, it was so overwhelming for him.

There’s a logical solution, that we have our dogs neutered, which will hopefully cure all this.  I admit I’m not quite ready to do that to Moss yet.

In the meantime, when this season is over, Moss will come out the other side a more mature dog, which is good.
